How to set custom ringtones in Windows Phone 7 with Mango

Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) supports custom ringtones. Custom ringtones was one of the most requested features for Windows Phone 7. Microsoft however did not made it easy to set a ringtone on your Windows Phone. Since the phone lacks a proper file manager and system, everything has to be done from Zune. To seperate ringtones from music, Microsoft says that a ringtone file should have the genre set to "RINGTONE" in Zune. There are also certain limitation to which files can actually be used as a ringtone. Custom Ringtones can currently be set for phone calls only. There is no option to set a custom alert for IM, text, voicemail or email.

The below tutorial is a step by step how to guide on setting up custom ringtones on your Windows Phone 7.5

Step 1

Download a ringtone which meets the criteria set by Microsoft for Windows Phone 7. For a sound file to be qualified as a ringtone, it must be:

  • 39 seconds or shorter
  • smaller than 1 megabyte (MB)
  • saved in MP3 or WMA format
  • not copy-protected (i.e. DRM free)

You can either make your own ringtone or download from eSeth.net. The downside from downloading from eSeth is you need to register an account. eSeth.net follows the above restrictions and criteria set by Microsoft regarding ringtones. so whatever ringtone you download will 100% be compatible with your Windows Phone 7. To download ringtones from the website first register an account and then login. Make sure you select your correct Windows Phone 7 model. As soon as you login you can see wallpapers and ringtones for your phone. Click view more to browse the entire site for ringtones.

Step 2

Once you have downloaded or created some ringtones make sure you save them in the music folder which is monitored by Zune. Any thing by default in the My Music folder would not require any addition settings in Zune. Open Zune and browse to Collection - Music - Songs. Click sort by date to find your latest downloaded ringtone easily.

Step 3

Now right click a sound file and then click edit.

Step 4

In the Edit Song Info Screen change the Genre to RINGTONE.

Step 5

Right click the sound file again and click Sync with your "Windows Phone Name". This is in assumption that your phone has already been set up once before with Zune. If not then connect your phone and set it up with Zune. After your finish set up and sync options come back to this step.

Zune will now sync the selected ringtone(s) with your phone.

Step 6

Disconnect your phone and go to Settings - ringtones + sounds.  Tap the current selected ringtone and scroll right at the top to see your custom ringtones. Select a ringtone and you are done.
